Snapchat threatens the souls of our young believers
Parents need to be aware of some of the apps their children are using. Young people also need to know of the dangers of using certain apps on their smartphones or tablets.
What is Snapchat?
Snapchat is a relatively new app on the social media scene, but already boasts 100 million daily users. The app essentially targets teens and allows them to post short, looping video clips. Along the way, they have added audio and video chat.
Social media has exploded in recent years due to the rise in use of the smartphone. Here in Jamaica, parents are placing these smartphones in the hands of children even younger than 10 year-old. It is to our young people, teens and children that social media poses the greatest moral and spiritual danger. The danger can be summed up in one word: “pride.”
Malachi 4:1 (KJV)
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith Yahweh of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
Pride, the attribute that Yahweh utterly detests is brought to a fore on Snapchat.
Snapchat Case Study
An acquaintance recently demonstrated the app to me and led me to take notice. We were speaking about social media and she said Snapchat is the ‘now’ thing. That ‘now’ means if the teens in our congregation have not yet downloaded the free app, they may do so soon.
She showed me a case study of her friend. I was shown the short video of the friend on Snapchat. They were at a party, and the friend was showing off almost every inch of her body and attire accompanied by sexually suggestive stares. She said she was next to the friend at the party for the whole night and she did not pay any attention to her partner. She spent the entire time taking photos and videos of herself for Snapchat and other social media..
In a case like this, pride takes one into self obsession. One has less time to love Yahweh and fellow men (two greatest commandments). It is now extremely difficult to follow Messiah, as one cannot first deny oneself as Yahshua advised (Mat 16:24) .
What makes it even more tempting is the fact that the videos are automatically removed after all your friends see it. If it is unopened, it is not opened by anyone, it is removed in 30 days automatically. This newness and time sensitivity leads users feeling the need to make more of an impact with their friends in the short allotted video time.
The app is also one of the main tools used in sexting. What is sexting? This is the term used to describe sending of sexually explicit photographs and videos through mobile phone. There are now many websites and forums dedicated to persons who ‘sext’ on Snapchat. Parents beware.
One might say I can use it and not be like other users. For a teen, that is very difficult. Peer pressure and the influence of the proud and worldly spirit that pervades Snapchat is difficult for a young person to overcome.
Proverbs 1:15 (KJV)
My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
To make things worse, the logo of the Snapchat video chat app is a ghost. Now that alone should tell a true believer that this is forbidden territory. Earlier this year, they added 200 new stickers including those of aliens and ghosts.
Snapchat is just one more step into taking our young people down the road of pride into self obsession, self indulgence and self love. This takes them further and further away from Yahweh and into the hands of HaSatan. Snapchat is truly a dangerous threat to the souls of our young people.
